Safe, sturdy, and fun! Oct 11, 2009 The Surfster J3 is simply the easiest and safest bodyboard for teaching kids to ride the waves. I've been bodyboarding for 40+ years on everything from plywood scraps and plastic trash can lids to expensive fiberglass boards, but the J3 is the board I completely trust my child with. It's sturdy and stable, and the materials won't degrade after hours in salt water. The J3 comes with a hand pump and patch kit; you'll need to get a leash seperately. My 7-year-old rides it from nearly dawn to dusk in 3-4 foot waves without any problems, long after the other kids have dragged their broken styro boards to the dumpster.
Important safety tip: you actually have to let air out of an inflatable board as it warms in the sun or risk damaging the internal bladder. The bladder is easily removable to rinse the inside of the shell and the board rolls up for easy packing in your suitcase or duffel bag.
And a note for parents: the J3 is designed for children. I'll admit to riding it quite a lot, but even with my medium frame (5'10" & 160#) it felt a bit narrow and squirrelly. The Surfster S3 Limited Inflatable Bodyboard / Boogie Board (Pink) with free Pump or the Surfster Blade Pro Inflatable Bodyboard / Boogie Board (Red) With Pump are probably a better size for older kids and adults. So get your own!
